Lovejoy Power Transmissions

Lovejoy has been a pioneer in advancing manufacturing technology for power transmission components since patenting the jaw coupling in 1927. Making this possible is the dedication of our people and the continued support of our customers. Our lasting success is also due to the fact that we are a privately held company whose primary goal is to give customers a value greater than the price paid for the product. To achieve this, we are committed to providing the highest quality products with the best customer service at the lowest possible price.

Company History
Thomas Lovejoy founded Lovejoy as a manufacturer of tooling and machinery for the railroad and steel industries, in 1900. Soon thereafter, in 1912, a long tradition of family ownership began when W. H. Dangel purchased the company.

Lovejoy's entrance into the power transmission industry occurred in 1927, when the patent for the Jaw coupling was purchased from Louis Ricefield. With that, we became the first to incorporate rubber-in-compression as a power transmission concept.

Lovejoy began manufacturing Universal Joints in 1946, the same year Merlin W. Dangel began serving as president of the company. The following year, the company made a major acquisition through its purchase of the Variable Speed Pulley line. In 1960, the production of VSPs was moved to a brand new plant in South Haven, Michigan. Then in 1962 and 1963, Lovejoy began manufacturing two new product lines: the Uniflex and the Saga lines. In 1964, C. Patrick Hennessy began his twenty-year service as president of the company.

The Lovejoy corporate headquarters were moved to their current location in Downers Grove, Illinois in 1970.

In 1978, Lovejoy formed a partnership with ROSTA-AG. This move allowed the company to market and manufacture products that incorporate elastomeric elements into tensioners, motor bases and much more.

Mike Hennessy became the current president of the company in 1984. The following year, the S-Flex coupling product line was added, and the patent for the Deltaflex coupling was obtained. In 1993, Lovejoy again expanded its arsenal of products to include two new product lines: Sier-Bath Gear Couplings and four different designs of Miniature Couplings. Our new Jaw In-Shear coupling was just introduced in late 1998.

Recently, Lovejoy has set its sights on international expansion. The company opened a warehouse in Holland in 1994; and in 1995, Lovejoy developed a line of Curved Jaw couplings, which is the European standard. In 1996, the company has introduced a line of all-metal, flexible grid couplings which protects PT systems from vibration and shock. Even more international expansion will be the goal for the future as Lovejoy proves that it truly is where the world turns for couplings.
